Marriage Admin | Changing My Name
So if you’ve been a regular here this past week you’ll know that I got married on August 1st. Since becoming a Mrs it’s not only my title that’s changed, my last name has too and let me tell you, it was quite the task to change. There are so many people to tell, some companies have a very easy system where you can literally upload a photo of your marriage certificate via their live chat and they’ll change it for you just like that. Others are little more archaic and insist on a written letter including a photocopy of your marriage certificate. Some places even want the original copy! Changing my name has definitely been exciting but boy, has it taken some work.
If you’re married and took your husband (or wifes) name then you’ll know what I’m talking about. Maybe you changed your name by deed poll even and had to go through a similar process. Either way, you’ll know just how many people you have to contact when it comes to changing something as important as your last name.
If you’re getting married and have yet to undertake this somewhat laborious task (yet still exciting, don’t get me wrong) then here are a few places you will probably have to contact when the time comes:
- Your bank
- Utility companies (gas, electricity & water)
- Landlord/mortgage company
- Your employer
- DVLA (for both your driving licence and your V5 – these are two separate processes)
- Sky/Virgin/BT etc
- Your mobile phone provider
- Any stores you shop with online
- Credit card company
- Any place you have a loyalty card
- Home insurance
- Pet insurance
- Car insurance
- Breakdown cover
- Credit Reference Agencies (Experian, Noddle etc)
- Phone insurance
- Apple ID
- TV licence
- Email account
- Hosting/Domain provider
- Council Tax
I think that probably just about covers it, but as you can see it’s a lot.
I’ve pretty much informed just about everyone I need to now and I am so glad it’s done. It’s such an exciting thing and I really love being a Mrs, now to try to restrain myself from buying anything and everything that says Mrs!
